Two Level 8m Deep Basement in London SW1
The works undertaken required the remodelling of two Georgian terraces to construct a new 7 storey property plus a 2 level 8m deep basement beneath. The upper areas were to be offices, the ground floor was proposed to be used as retail extending to the cellars which are to be used as a Wine School and Hospitality suite for Berry Brothers & Rudd.
Factors affecting both the design and practical installation of the works were the spatial constraint of the site to approximately 12m x 20m together with the zero movements to sensitive Party Wall neighbours. The works were further complicated with the added constraint of partially retained section of Georgian façade and surrounded by Grade II listed building on three sides. The proposed basement was to extend into the Shaw Lightwell dating back to 1880’s with new openings through and into the Napoleonic vaults.
Geostructural Solutions and GSS Piling were commissioned to carry out the following work activities: –
- 450/508 diameter contiguous piled wall on 3 sides only
- 450mm diameter bearing piles
- Traditional RC structure below Ground Floor
- 150mm thick sprayed RC lining walls with drained cavity
- Deep drainage attenuation (4.5m below B2 Slab Level)
This complicated feat of engineering was delivered to programme, to the highest quality of workmanship from all members of the design and construction team and to the clients satisfaction.
