8m deep basement of a Prestigious Building in London SW1
Formation of 8m deep basement in the completely enclosed rear garden of a prestigious building. The ground consisted of water bearing sands and gravels over clay with a seven storey building alongside. Other structural works were to take place concurrently within the main building. This project presented a challenge in terms of engineering expertise but an even greater challenge in terms of logistics for access and egress. Top down construction techniques were used to resist the considerable surcharge imposed on the basement excavation by the surrounding buildings. Placing the uppermost slab at an early stage created space to store materials whilst enabling safe working to proceed simultaneously above and below ground level.
