Jacking & Moving
Both Andy Parks and Tim Jolley Headed up the Special Contracts Division at Abbey Pynford when buildings were moved such as Belle Tout Lighthouse, The Water Point St Pancras and Bridge House Mersham. David Bell and other key personnel within GSS have direct experience of lifting and moving buildings. Since that time Geostructural Solutions Ltd has lifted several buildings by hydraulic jacking and has moved a ‘Forward Lead-in Light’ in Aberdeen. Please see the photographs and video clip relating to this project.
The structure is comprised of cast iron and dates back to the Nineteenth Century. Still used for navigation by pilots of vessels entering the harbour, the light was becoming obstructed due to the growing number of buildings and other structures being erected on the harbour side. A crane move was not possible due to the congested nature of the site so Geostructural Solutions were appointed to lift and slide the structure to a new unobstructed site on the water edge. A steel frame was stitched into place below the base of the structure. This was hydraulically jacked upwards to allow a slide track to be placed below. The Lead-in Light was then slid along the track onto a new reception site. It was finally jacked down into position and the lifting frame surrounded in concrete to form part of the new foundation.
